Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."
